Endika Diez Hits Form to Cause Biggest Opening Day Upset in Almeria

Silver medallist in the Junior Boys’ Singles event on the at the Tunisian Junior and Cadet Open in 2008, when beaten in the final by Egypt’s Omar Assar, Endika Diez was the toast of Spain on the evening of Wednesday 18th April 2008 in Almeria’s Palacio de los Juegos del Mediterraneo.


In his opening contest in the qualification stage of the Men’s Singles event at the GAC GROUP 2012 ITTF World Tour Spanish Open, he excelled to beat Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting, a player in form in recent months.


It was arguably the biggest upset on the opening day of action.

Dorian Nicolle Upsets Seeding and Delights Home Supporters in Metz

Playing on home soil, 17 year old Dorian Nicolle was the player to attract the attention, as matters commenced in the main draw of the Junior Boys’ Singles event at the French Junior and Cadet Open in Metz on Wednesday 18th April 2012.


Required to compete in the group stage of proceedings earlier in the day and emerging successful, he duly maintained his form to cause a second round upset.


He accounted for Germany’s talented Qiu Liang, the twelfth seed in Metz and a player who has been in outstanding form on this year's ITTF Junior Circuit.

Four Time Olympian Proves Valuable Asset at Auckland Training Camp

Staged prior to the commencement of proceedings at the KVB Kunlun TTNZ 2012 New Zealand Junior and Cadet Open, which starts on Thursday 19th April and concludes on Sunday 22nd April 2012, a three day ITTF Training Camp was staged.


Proceedings commenced on Monday 16th April and concluded on Wednesday 18th April with Jens Lang, the High Performance Director for Table Tennis Australia being the man in charge.


He was ably supported by Michael Brown, the Oceania Development Officer with Miao Miao, who has qualified for the forthcoming London Olympic Games, a most valuable assistant.

First Place Means First Place for Hugo Calderano

A first career Junior Boys’ Singles win on the ITTF Junior Circuit means that Hugo Calderano moves into first place on the ITTF Junior Circuit Boys’ Standings.


The 15 year old Brazilian from Rio de Janeiro won the Junior Boys’ Singles title at the Argentina Junior and Cadet Open in Buenos Aires on Tuesday 17th April 2012; as a result he leads the global list with 1780 points.


It was a fine effort from the Brazilian teenager who still has two further years in the age group.


He will still be eligible to compete in junior tournaments in 2014.

Clean Sweep of Titles, Hugo Calderano the Golden Boy in Buenos Aires

A quarter-final earlier in the year in the Czech Republic, Brazil’s Hugo Calderano secured his first ever ITTF Junior Circuit Boys’ Singles title by emerging successful at the Argentina Junior and Cadet Open in Buenos Aires on Tuesday 17th April 2012.


Not only did the 15 year old from Rio de Janeiro secure the Junior Boys’ Singles crown; in addition, on the concluding day of play he partnered colleague Eric Jouti to Junior Boys’ Doubles success, having earlier in the tournament lined up alongside his doubles partner and Vitor Ishiy to secure Junior Boys’ Team success.


Throughout the whole tournament, Hugo Calderano was unbeaten.

An Invitation to Umpire at the United States Junior and Cadet Open

USA Table Tennis invites national governing bodies to nominate a maximum of four International Umpires to officiate at the United States Junior and Cadet Open to be held in Grand Rapids, Michigan, from Saturday 30th June to Wednesday 4th July 2012.


The venue for the event will be at the splendid DeVos Place Convention Center.


It is an open invitation and therefore not all nominations may be accepted.


Furthermore only nominations from national associations and federations will be considered.

A deeply established tradition in the sport of table tennis, Poland is one of the longest standing members of the International Table Tennis Federation; the country joined in 1930.


Equally, Cetniewo has a rich and proud tradition in sport, especially table tennis and once again the city is the host for an ITTF Junior Circuit tournament.


The Polish Junior and Cadet Open will be held in Cetniewo from Wednesday 30th May to Sunday 3rd June 2012.


Undoubtedly, a tournament in state-of-the-art facilities awaits.

Ma Long Selected, Reigning Olympic Champion will Not Defend Title in London

Men’s Singles and Men’s Team event gold medallist at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, Ma Lin will not be present in the ExCel Arena to defend his title at the London 2012 Olympic Games.


Head coach of the Chinese Men’s National Team. Liu Guoliang, has named Ma Long as the player who will represent China at the Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament which commences in Hong Kong on Thursday 19th April and concludes on Sunday 22nd April 2012.


Wang Hao and Zhang Jike have already qualified for the London Olympic Games as a result of occupying the respective top two positions on the World Rankings following the GAC GROUP 2011 World Championships in Rotterdam.

The recently completed European Qualification Tournament staged in Luxembourg for the London 2012 Olympic Games witnessed a host of fierce contests.


Players strained every sinew to gain a place in the prestigious quadrennial event.


However just as with any major sporting gathering there was activity taking place behind the scenes and it was an occasion for new acquaintances to be made on old ones rekindled.


Many members of the Swaythling Club International were present and took the opportunity to meet.
